SAFETY

Safety on Board – The Junk Liveaboards

The Junk Liveaboards operate with trained crew, documented procedures, and redundant safety systems. This page details the equipment carried, operational protocols, and the rationale behind them for both The Junk and The Phinisi.

Safety Policy

Safety is embedded in daily operations. All guests receive a mandatory safety briefing and life-jacket drill at trip commencement. Crew conduct periodic practice scenarios to maintain response readiness.

Emergency Management & Equipment

Both vessels carry modern, redundant equipment to enable controlled evacuation, location, and retrieval if required.

  • Life Rafts: 2 × 25-person units
Rationale: Redundancy and capacity meet or exceed total persons onboard.
  • Life Jackets: Available for all guests and crew
Rationale: Immediate flotation during abandon-ship procedures.
  • Life Rings: Positioned on deck
Rationale: Rapid response for man-overboard recovery.
  • EPIRB: Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon
Rationale: Transmits position to SAR authorities for accelerated location.
  • Satellite Communication: Installed (Phinisi)
Rationale: Maintains contact when outside standard radio range.
  • VHF/SSB Radios: Installed
Rationale: Ship-to-ship/shore communication and distress channels.
  • Emergency Pumps: Installed
Rationale: Rapid de-watering capability in flooding scenarios.
  • Emergency Escape Routes: The Junk – escape routes at both ends of the main cabin corridor; The Phinisi – escape hatches in each cabin with extendable ladders
Rationale: Multiple egress points enable rapid evacuation from accommodation spaces in the event of fire or obstruction.
  • Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs): 2 per vessel
Rationale: Provides redundancy for diver pick-up, rapid response to incidents, and efficient transport to and from dive sites.
  • CCTV: Installed in public areas and all mechanical spaces
Rationale: Continuous monitoring supports incident prevention, enhances situational awareness, and assists in post-incident review.
  • Night Watch: Maintained
Rationale: Continuous monitoring of weather, traffic, and vessel status.

Crew Training: Crew on both vessels are trained in emergency management procedures. Drills align with documented checklists and are refreshed during the voyage when appropriate.

First Aid & Medical Readiness

  • First Aid Kit: Fully stocked
Rationale: Immediate care for minor injuries and support for medical professionals if embarked.
  • Qualified Emergency Responders: Dive team certified
Rationale: Competent first response while awaiting advanced care.
  • Emergency Oxygen: Medical-grade supply with DAN kits and unit-specific attachments
Rationale: Frontline intervention for suspected DCI and certain acute incidents.
  • AED: Automated External Defibrillator
Rationale: Evidence-based improvement in survival for shockable cardiac rhythms.

Fire Detection & Suppression

  • Detectors: Smoke, heat, and CO detection fitted
Rationale: Early warning enables faster containment.
  • Portable Extinguishers: Located throughout
    Rationale: Immediate first-attack capability.
  • CO₂ Fixed Fire-Fighting System: Installed
Rationale: Rapid flooding of protected spaces to remove oxygen and suppress fire.
  • Additional Fire-Fighting Equipment: Carried; both vessels are among the few in the region with this level of provision
Rationale: Layered suppression and redundancy where time-to-response is critical.

Communication & Watchkeeping

Primary and secondary communication systems (VHF/SSB and satellite) permit escalation and coordination with nearby vessels and shore authorities. A dedicated night watch is maintained to monitor navigational and environmental conditions.

Diving Operations

  • Group Size: Target ratio of 4–5 divers per dive leader
Rationale: Improved supervision, clearer briefings, controlled ascents, and more effective buddy checks.
  • Pre-Dive Briefings: Site, depth, current, separation, and emergency procedures covered prior to entry
Rationale: Common understanding of plan and contingencies.
  • Standby Medical Readiness: Oxygen and AED available whenever diving is in progress
    Rationale: Immediate intervention capability.
